May 10 2020 (13:30 WEST)

The Government will lift from this Monday the prohibition to carry out regular commercial air operations between the Canary Islands and between the Balearic Islands, within the measures to be applied in phase 1 of the de-escalation in terms of mobility in the Plan for the Transition to a New Normal (PTNN).

According to the order of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda published this Sunday in the Official State Gazette (BOE), this restoration of commercial flights in the island territories will be effective from 00:00 tonight. However, air connection restrictions with the Iberian Peninsula remain in place.

In addition, the order establishes, in the case of the Canary Islands, reference rates for each of the routes, on one-way trips, which are established as follows: Gran Canaria-Tenerife North: 69 euros, Gran Canaria-Tenerife South: 78 euros, Gran Canaria-Fuerteventura: 78 euros, Gran Canaria-El Hierro: 112 euros, Gran Canaria-Lanzarote: 88 euros, Gran Canaria-La Palma: 106 euros, Tenerife North-Fuerteventura: 107 euros, Tenerife North-El Hierro: 78 euros, Tenerife North-Lanzarote: 112 euros, Tenerife North-La Palma: 72 euros, La Palma-Lanzarote: 112 euros, Gran Canaria-La Gomera: 106 euros, Tenerife North-La Gomera: 78 euros.

Essential minimum services and 50% of the passenger capacity

Likewise, in order to safeguard essential basic air connectivity between the islands during the duration of the state of alarm, the performance of two daily frequencies on the Gran Canaria-Tenerife Norte, Gran Canaria-Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria-Lanzarote and Tenerife Norte-La Palma routes will be considered as an essential minimum service. For the Tenerife Norte-El Hierro route, a daily frequency is set.

In the case of the Balearic Islands, the performance of two daily roundtrip flights between Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza, and two daily roundtrip flights between Palma de Mallorca and Menorca is established as an essential minimum service.

According to the cabinet headed by José Luis Ábalos, operators offering the service must offer the public only 50% of the total capacity of each aircraft to ensure proper separation between passengers.

In the Balearic Islands, maritime services with the Peninsula are restored

On the other hand, the order also sets measures for maritime transport in this phase 1, raising the need to adapt the conditions of provision of inter-island passenger transport services. In addition, in the case of the Balearic archipelago, maritime services with the Peninsula are restored.

On the other hand, in both archipelagos, the conditions under which recreational navigation and certain related activities can be carried out are determined.

Likewise, in the Canary Islands, in the province, island or territorial unit of reference in phase 1, ships and boats dedicated to tourist transport of passengers, which are not cruise-type passenger ships, those intended for activities of teaching practices and training courses, and those used for recreational or sports purposes by their owners or in nautical leases, may navigate between ports or points on the coast of the same municipality and nearby uninhabited islands.
