The Canary Islands is again in 2024, for the sixth consecutive year, the autonomous community of the State with the highest rate of lawsuits for marital dissolution per 100,000 inhabitants -236.4-, although divorces have decreased by 4.4 percent compared to 2023.

In all the judicial bodies of the autonomous community, as of December 31, 2024, 236.4 lawsuits for marital dissolution were registered per 100,000 inhabitants, which places the archipelago as a leader in these statistics, a position it has held uninterruptedly since 2019, as reported this Monday by the General Council of the Judiciary through its statistical service.

According to the report, between January and December 2024, the civil courts of the Canary Islands recorded a total of 5,232 lawsuits for separations, divorces or marriage annulments, which represents a decrease of 4.4% compared to 2023, when 5,473 were recorded.

By provinces, the number of judicialized marital breakdowns was higher last year in Las Palmas (2,714) than in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (2,505).

At the national level, the judicial bodies registered 95,650 separations, divorces and marriage annulments in 2024, an increase of 3.6% in lawsuits for marital dissolution compared to the same period in 2023.

With these data, the CGPJ explained in a statement, figures similar to those recorded in 2022 are returned, when marital breakdowns were 95,193.

The year-on-year increase of 3.6% is mainly due to divorce lawsuits, especially those by mutual agreement.

Between January and December of last year, there were 55,146 lawsuits for divorce by mutual agreement, 4.4% more, while non-consensual divorces climbed 2.8% to 37,080.

In the field of separations, however, decreases were recorded: 2,355 by mutual agreement, a decrease of 0.6%, and 1,006 non-consensual, 3.2% lower than the previous year.

For its part, there were 63 lawsuits for marriage annulment registered, compared to 51 in the same period last year, so an increase of 23.5% has been detected.

After the Canary Islands, the highest rates are recorded in the Comunitat Valenciana (221.9), the Balearic Islands (219.9), Murcia (212.3), Andalusia (211.6), La Rioja (206.7) and Castilla-La Mancha (204.6).

The lowest values were given in Galicia (195.2), Navarra (194.9), Catalonia (193.3), Asturias (192.2), Cantabria (187.9), Aragon (184.4), Madrid (181.2), Extremadura (180.3), Castilla y León (169.7) and the Basque Country (168.1).

In its annual statistics, the CGPJ also reports on the procedures for modification of measures in separation and divorce proceedings, as well as custody and alimony for non-marital children.

Lawsuits for modification of measures by mutual agreement increased by 4.5% to 13,045, while non-consensual ones also grew, in this case by 2.8% to 32,423.

The modifications of measures related to non-marital children registered increases in the case of non-consensual ones (they climbed 4.5% to 28,506), while the consensual ones increased by 3.9% to 23,144.
