The General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has declared a state of alert due to the possible impact on basic supplies after the electronic blackout suffered by the Iberian Peninsula, Spain and Portugal, as well as the south of France.
Red Eléctrica Española has reported that at 4:30 p.m. (Canary time) around nine autonomous communities have recovered part of their electricity and that the service is not expected to return to normal until at least 9:00 p.m. In addition, throughout the country, hundreds of people have been trapped in building elevators and thousands in peninsular public transport, including metro, commuter and long-distance trains.
In addition, problems are being recorded on the mobile line in Lanzarote as some users are having problems when calling. Also, internet access is being affected in some parts of the island, as are the dataphones of some businesses, which are having problems functioning correctly.
The Minister of Transport, Óscar Puentes, also reported that medium and long-distance transport will not recover throughout the day. Meanwhile, he estimates that it will take two hours to restore the rest of public transport once the electricity is restored.
"We still do not have conclusive information on the reasons for this cut," said the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, during an intervention on the afternoon of this Monday, who asked citizens to be informed by official sources and to be prepared for the dissemination of hoaxes, which is common in crisis contexts.
It is recommended to obtain batteries, candles and an analog radio to stay informed in case of a power outage on the islands.
