Sewage spills in Costa Teguise

A reader has contacted La Voz to report the alleged discharge of sewage on Los Charcos beach, in Costa Teguise. Specifically, this water, according to the citizen, comes from the Sands Beach hotel.

In the images, recorded this Thursday, you can see how brown water and some wipes that "smell like feces" come out of a pipe that flows into the sea, as detailed by the reader. "They are dumping sewage directly into the sea, presumably as part of a cleaning process of their internal sanitation networks," he says.

"This practice poses a serious risk to public health, contaminates the marine environment and constitutes an environmental crime punishable by fines and even criminal liability," he continues.

For its part, the Teguise City Council has confirmed to La Voz that they were not aware of this discharge of water and that "they have sent municipal workers to check whether it is sewage or not." After inspecting the area, the Council assures that this Friday "they have verified that there is no discharge on Las Charcos beach."

In addition, the reader criticizes the state of Costa Teguise after the last rains on April 12, since "the municipality is still in a state of total abandonment by the City Council."

He also states that "the lack of preparation, response capacity and inefficiency of this administration to manage emergency situations has been evident because the beaches are still destroyed, the sports facilities covered in mud and abandoned, the gardens and promenades are practically impassable, the dirt accumulates everywhere and the dust covers everything."
