A Spanish triathlete has once again tasted the honey of triumph at Ironman Lanzarote, considered the toughest triathlon in the world. Víctor del Corral, an athlete who spends long training stays in Lanzarote, was the winner of the race held this Saturday. The Catalan triathlete had a race from less to more and it was in the running segment where he decided the race. In the women's category, the Danish Michelle Vesterby was the one who crossed the finish line in first place.
Ironman Lanzarote broke the record for participants again, with more than 1,550 triathletes taking the start on Saturday morning. The race started in Playa Grande (Puerto del Carmen) with great expectation. Thousands of people crowded the shore of the beach to follow the evolution of the men and women of "iron" in the 3.8 kilometers of swimming. A spectacular image that will remain in the memory of the hundreds of visitors who are in Lanzarote these days.
The swimming and cycling segment was dominated by the British Philips Graves, increasing his advantage as the kilometers passed. At the end of the 180 kilometers of cycling he had more than twelve minutes of advantage over Victor del Corral. A difference that was not enough, being forced to retire in kilometer 21 due to muscular problems.
The Catalan Víctor del Corral went from less to more, being in the running race when he printed a greater rhythm. The triathlete spends long training seasons on the island of Lanzarote and knows the island's orography perfectly. Víctor del Corral crossed the finish line in first place, marking a time of 8 hours, 44 minutes and 40 seconds.
The second place in the men's general was for the British Stephen Bayliss, entering the finish line with a time of 8 hours, 53 minutes and 38 seconds. The podium was completed by the Portuguese Sergio Marques (09:02:59).
Michelle Vesterbey, winner in women's category
In the women's category there was no color and the Danish Michelle Vesterbey dominated the race from beginning to end. She entered the finish line before ten hours of competition, marking an exact time of 09:58:07. The second place was for Bella Bayliss, being the time of the Englishwoman of 10:06:13. The fact of having been a mother nine months ago has not prevented her from being present in this edition of the Ironman. The third place was for Heleen Bij De Vaate (10:17:34).
The Madrid native Saleta Castro, a triathlete who occupied the first places in the classification during a good part of the race, collapsed in the running segment and finally finished the Ironman Lanzarote in a more than meritorious seventh place.
David Rodríguez and Fernando Rodríguez, the best Canary Islander and conejero of the race respectively
Among the Canary Islanders this year the Ironman Lanzarote has been marked by the absence of Gregorio Cáceres and Nicholas Peter Ward. Both have not been able to participate due to injuries. The Gran Canaria native David Rodríguez has taken the honor of being the best Canary Islander of the race, entering the finish line in thirteenth place with a time of 09:27:06.
The best Lanzarote native has been Fernando Rodríguez of the Tridente Tinajo Club, using a time of 09:56:04. Fernando has entered the finish line in 42nd place overall.
In women, the Lanzarote native Ruth Brito, in her first participation in the Ironman Lanzarote, has concluded the race in a meritorious twenty-sixth place with a mark of 11:56:46.
