The world of professional tennis from all over Europe will be watching the island of Lanzarote from this weekend. Puerto del Carmen becomes the venue for the first edition of the I International Men's Tennis Tournament ITF Isla de Lanzarote, with the participation of tennis players from 15 countries from the United States, United Kingdom, Sweden, France, Italy, Argentina, Russia, Colombia, Switzerland, Brazil and Spain, among other nationalities.
The Tías City Council sponsors this great tennis event in the Canary Islands and Spain as a commitment to tourism diversification to promote Puerto del Carmen and Lanzarote as a great destination for sporting events. "From now on - as highlighted by the mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández, during the presentation held at the Hotel Los Fariones - we want to unite elite tennis with athletics, scuba diving and cycling as channeling axes for the external projection of Puerto del Carmen.".
"During this autumn and winter in Europe there is no outdoor tennis competition, except for this one in Lanzarote that we are now putting on the professional tennis calendar in the world", added the mayor. "We want", highlighted Pancho Hernández, "many professional tennis players to come to Puerto del Carmen and Lanzarote to do their training in winter. This first championship of the Isla de Lanzarote ITF Tournament is the first commitment to this diversification. Puerto del Carmen is synonymous with sporting life. Together with the Ironman, Ocean Lava, or the Lava Sea Photo Sub, tennis joins as a great attraction for external projection", highlighted the first mayor of Tías.
Meetings with schoolchildren
The Tournament will be held between November 23 and December 8 at the facilities of the Fariones Sports Center, in Puerto del Carmen, an entity that together with the Tías City Council sponsors this event. At the same time, professional tennis players will participate in different enotourism activities in Masdache and La Geria, scuba diving on the Chica beach in Puerto del Carmen, and will visit the different schools in the municipality of Tías where they will hold meetings with schoolchildren to promote the practice of this sport.
One of the prominent presences in this tournament in Lanzarote is that of the Canarian tennis player David Marrero, who recently won the doubles title of the Masters Cup together with Fernando Verdasco.
The facilities of the Fariones Sports Center in Puerto del Carmen, on the island of Lanzarote, will host two new international ITF Futures tournaments of 10 thousand dollars, which will close the Spanish calendar of 2013 next December, bringing to a total of 42 the events of this category in Spain, included in the men's world circuit. The first of these will be held the week of November 25, and the second from December 2, both on hard court.
