The XII International Hang Gliding Open and Canary Islands Championship concluded with the victory of the local pilot Benito Rodríguez González, with 2,531 points, followed closely by the Gran Canaria native Lucio Nelli, runner-up with 2,507 points, and the Cádiz native José Manuel Daza Martín finishing third with 1,932 points.
Last Sunday, November 30, the heats began in the Famara area with a goal in San Bartolomé, where, due to weather conditions, it was decided to take off from Cerro Terroso (Teguise). The test consisted of 55 kilometers, which was completed by the Gran Canaria native Lucio Nelli, placing him in the lead in both the Open and the Canary Islands Championship standings in this first heat. Second place went to the local pilot Pedro Venosa, and third to Jorge Kuzmanich, also from Gran Canaria.
On the 4th, the flight conditions were very harsh, and only a few pilots managed to complete all the beacons and head towards the goal. The goal was not achieved, with the local pilot Benito Rodríguez being the closest to it, covering a distance of 34.8 kilometers. He was followed by Lucio Nelli and Esteban González, with 28.6 kilometers.
In the following test on Friday the 5th, only the local pilot Benito Rodríguez managed to reach the goal, winning the heat of the day, which placed him at the top of the overall standings with 2,434 points, with the Gran Canaria native Lucio Nelli in second place with 2,360 points, and the Austrian pilot Wolfgang Brunner in third place with 1,821 points.
On Saturday the 6th, Lucio Nelli managed to cover 12.9 kilometers, winning the final heat, followed closely by the rest of the pilots participating in the Open, in which a total of 26 pilots from different national federations such as the Catalan, Valencian, Andalusian, and Canarian federations participated, as well as international federations such as the Austrian and Guatemalan federations.
