CICAR Lanzarote falls to Balonmano Morvedre in a heart-stopping finish

A great second half isn't enough to overcome Balonmano Morvedre

BALONMANO. Morvedre San José Obrero (2)
BALONMANO. Morvedre San José Obrero (2)

The match this Sunday was circled in red on the CICAR Lanzarote Ciudad de Arrecife calendar, as they visited Balonmano Morvedre with two important points at stake in the fight to remain in the Liga Guerreras Iberdrola. San José Obrero had a hard time getting into the game, putting together a brilliant second half, but it wasn't enough to score points despite having a two-goal lead.

The match did not start well for the interests of CICAR Lanzarote Ciudad de Arrecife, conceding a 3-0 run. Goalkeeper Paola Santos scored from her own goal, and the coach of the Lanzarote team had to stop the match when barely five minutes of the first half had been played (4-1).

The Balonmano Morvedre defense was causing many problems for CICAR Lanzarote Ciudad de Arrecife. The locals pressured the first line, and the San José Obrero's attacking actions did not have enough rhythm. The Sagunto team had several attacks to increase the difference to five goals, and with the score of 14 to 10, the first half came to an end.

The development of the match changed radically in the second half. The period began with a 0-3 run in favor of the Lanzarote team, with Keyla Hernández scoring two goals in individual plays and Gema Trujillo from the right wing. Rocío Squizziato's work at the pivot was also fundamental, scoring three goals at the start of the second half and tying the game (17-17).

The CICAR Lanzarote Ciudad de Arrecife's game continued to grow as the minutes passed, showing great confidence in each defensive action and led in attack by Carla Rivas and Celia López. It was precisely Celia López who was responsible for putting her team ahead for the first time on the scoreboard and even increasing the lead to two goals (18-20).

With nine minutes left in the match, Andrea Claramonte, from the left wing, was responsible for leveling the score (21-21), after several plays in which she had encountered good interventions from Irene Sánchez between the posts. CICAR Lanzarote Ciudad de Arrecife entered a dynamic of errors in attack, failing to take advantage of two clear counterattacks and even failing to convert a seven-meter throw.

María Pérez reappeared for Balonmano Morvedre in the final minutes, scoring several decisive goals that put her team ahead on the scoreboard. Rebeca López ended up sealing the match, increasing the difference to three goals in the final minutes.

With a score of 28 to 25, the match came to an end, with CICAR Lanzarote Ciudad de Arrecife suffering a defeat against a direct rival in the fight to remain in the Guerreras Iberdrola League. The competition resumes on Saturday, October 25, with the derby that will pit San José Obrero against Zonzamas in Titerroy.
