Club Balonmano Puerto del Carmen received Mavi Nuevas Tecnologías La Calzada, a team from the highest national category that is looking to enter European competitions this season.
The match began with long and effective attacks from the locals, who managed to take the lead on the scoreboard, adding their first attacks with goals, but always with a minimal advantage against the Gijón team.
Before reaching the 10th minute, Diego Lafuente's girls had already managed to take the lead on the scoreboard and even managed to put 'land in between', forcing Jesús Casanova to call a time-out to restore the defensive and offensive order of his players.
The break helped, and a lot, the Lanzarote team, who returned the 3-0 partial that they had just received to the peninsular team to get back into the game again.
One of the ovations of the match was taken by Mary Sánchez, a Lanzarote player who plays for Mavi Nuevas Tecnologías. 'La flaca' (the skinny one) jumped onto the court of the Tías Municipal as a visiting player, something she had never done before, taking the applause of the public present.
The match was going on with equality and normality, with the score stagnating at 10-12 with 5 minutes to go, thus concluding the first half of the match.
The locals came out in the second half to face again a team plagued with internationals from different countries but aware of the difficulty involved in turning the game around and winning against their rival.
That was the idea, but the wear and tear began to take its toll on the Lanzarote players, who first with a 0-3 partial and then with a 0-4 saw how the match was gradually turning purple, like the color of the Mavi Nuevas Tecnologías jersey.
The time had come to start thinking about what really matters, the League. Jesús Casanova gave instructions so that they would not go to the clash and avoid injuries ahead of next Saturday's match. But the players' desire to please meant that these instructions were not always so well received.
Players 'of a lifetime' of the club were combined on the court with the young values that brought freshness and even more illusion inside the court. Time passed and Puerto del Carmen lost 18 to 28, but for many the time stopped at the beginning of it and the victory remained in the memory of the club's players. Eva Morales, Kenia Hernández, Atteneri Morales, Lourdes Guadalupe, Lucía Betancort, Nereida Montelongo, Cristina Betancort.....they made the dream that many tried before come true, playing the Queen's Cup.
