The Councilor for Youth and Sports of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Manuel Cabrera, the Councilor for Youth and Sports of the Yaiza City Council, Evaristo García, and Oliver Acuña, from the Vulcano Triathlon Club of Lanzarote, presented this Tuesday morning, at the Benito Pérez Armas House of Culture in Yaiza, the IX edition of the La Bocaina Swimming Crossing, a long-distance swimming event that will cover the 14,800 meters separating the towns of Playa Blanca (Lanzarote) and Corralejo (Fuerteventura), and which will be held next Saturday, October 18.
Both politicians highlighted the "extreme toughness" of this event while predicting a beautiful spectacle. In addition, they reaffirmed their commitment to holding events of this type as a complement to the current tourist offer in Lanzarote. "We have unbeatable conditions for practicing this sport. Conditions that we must take advantage of to create new flows that attract tourists interested in open water swimming," said the island councilor.
For his part, the southern councilor also confirmed that the holding of this event is another sign of the municipal intention to turn Playa Blanca into a hub where tourism and sports go hand in hand. "Last Saturday we held the Canary Islands Cross Triathlon Championship; this coming Saturday, the swimming crossing to Corralejo, and on Sunday, a solidarity race for a hospital in Cameroon. I think it is a sign of the Yaiza City Council's firm commitment to high-level sports," he said.
The City Council emphasizes that "the Playa Blanca - Corralejo swimming crossing has become, over the years, one of the most important in the Canary Islands and one of the most traditional in the national calendar," and they recall that "it has had the participation of renowned national and international athletes, such as the multiple-time European and World Long Distance Swimming Champion, David Meca".
Participants usually take between 4 and 7 hours to complete the distance separating Playa Blanca from Corralejo. The direction generally chosen by the organization to carry out the event is Playa Blanca ? Corralero, mainly due to the dominant direction of winds and currents.
The organization has chosen the month of October as it is one of the months of the year in which the sea conditions are good enough to allow the development of an event of these characteristics, whose toughness in adverse conditions can be greater than that of the crossing of the Strait of Gibraltar.
