Lanzarote has to play in the first division

November 22 2015 (11:27 WET)

In Coalición Canaria we already know what we have done well. Although it may seem like a lack of modesty, you only have to look at the results of the past local and regional elections.
But a historic moment is approaching for all of us and, being self-critical, there is something we have not done so well.
We have not been able to convey to citizens that NOW, next December, we are risking it all. It gives the impression that our future, that of all of us who are fortunate to live in this land, was conditioned by the results in the elections to the Parliament of the Canary Islands, the island councils and the town councils of the islands, something like what happens here we want to decide here and what happens outside, let those outside decide. And in part, it is true, until now it seems that it has been like that. That is why we must try to change things, but among everyone. Governing in the Canary Islands is extremely important... but something is missing. Canarians cannot settle for playing only in the regional league; we also have to win in the first division and now is when we can do it. I know that my previous article did not please many because I used football terms. But I also know that the idea that I am trying to make understand reached people, that some are determined that those of us who live in this part of the world do not participate in their league and that they are the ones who always decide for us.

What difference does it make to us whether the PSOE or the PP governs in Madrid? If surely, whoever wins, the Canary Islands, as always, will be a despised community. And, does anyone believe that Ciudadanos or Podemos are going to treat us better? Allow me to doubt it. I don't see Albert Rivera especially worried about the needs of the Islands and I fear that Pablo Iglesias has no intention of passing through Lanzarote, unless they assure him half an hour of maximum audience on a national TV, of course, not on the Canarian one.

And since they are not going to think about us, we have to do it, the politicians who want to bring the reality of the Archipelago to Madrid and the citizens who are going to choose who they want to do it. It is not taking the Canarian voice to Madrid as my colleagues insist on transferring again and again, it is taking the feeling of those of us who live here to the capital, whether they have a Canarian accent or not. The feeling of the different, of a region that is not called ultraperipheral by chance, where moving outside our territory becomes in most cases an authentic odyssey...

The parliamentarians and senators of the PSOE and the PP who have been elected on previous occasions have only been the obedient students who suck up to the teachers and who would never think of asking an uncomfortable question for fear of lowering their grade. Definitely, a nationalist party is needed that is not afraid to give an opinion contrary to the one that the teacher wants to impose, brave students are needed who are in Congress and in the Senate defending the colleagues they have left in their town.

Now it is about explaining who can play that role and who cannot, who is a nationalist and who is not at this time, if they ever were.

Without intending to offend, Nueva Canarias has made it clear that for a vote MA-TA and that it does not matter to them to join the side that is to achieve it. It has touched the PSOE, but it could have been Izquierda Unida, UPyD or Junts per lo que sea. The important thing was to add points, as in Eurovision. Following the simile of the school classroom, the parliamentarians and senators of NC would be the silent student who hides at the end of the class so that they do not see him and ask him the lesson.

The only ones who continue to maintain the nationalist DNA are Coalición Canaria. There can be no discussion about it. If you want the decisions that affect all Canarians to be defended by someone who does not have to be accountable, we are your men and women.

I was saying that we had not been able to transmit the importance of the nationalist vote in a general election; that it seemed that these were the elections of others, not ours. To rectify is wise and we have little more than a month to convince all the inhabitants of this fantastic land that the useful vote is not to vote for the PP or the PSOE, that the true useful vote is to bet on our own defended by our people.

As far as I am concerned, I will continue to insist during this time that both Marci Acuña and I are going to leave our skin so that Lanzarote is something more than a vacation destination. Lanzarote will be discussed in Congress and in the Senate to demand what corresponds to us. But for that, we need all those who think like us, because without their support, we can do little.

We know that we can be strong but it is all the women and men of Lanzarote who must give us the push that the occasion requires. Therefore, for all those who have always voted for us and those who have never done so but want the feeling of this land to be transferred to Madrid, I ask once again for confidence in this project. Try it. We will be better off, I assure you. It couldn't be worse.
