He went for a run, as he did almost daily, only on 07/22/09 he decided not to return. His inseparable Marga found him a while later in one of the beautiful places he toured in the area of La Asomada and La Geria. I could imagine that he found garbage on some road and got angry, or he thought about the tourism crisis we are suffering, or about the political embarrassments that continuously harm our island, or about the unfair situation that personal friends such as Carlinga or Fernando are going through.
There were so many reasons to be upset that anything for a perfectionist, serious, fair, demanding, heartfelt person like Hugo was enough to block his brain. From there to the hospital, where he donated his organs, of pure blood, for the salvation of some lucky person. And straight to heaven. It is only fair to thank all the staff of the General Hospital for the good treatment and professionalism received.
That night I had the terrible role of telling friends that Hugo, just turned forty, had decided to abandon us. In the wake all the friends of Caletón with tears in their eyes; Menty, Carlos, Jaime, Manolo, Federico, Pope, Airam, Miguel, Alejandro, Ricardo, was traveling but surely he also cried where he was. Like Fernando, who is as if he were traveling, but he cried, I'm sure he cried when they let him know. And with us many relatives and many more friends. It is also appropriate to thank here the parish priest of Tías, for his prompt response to the late request to celebrate the mass.
I spent my childhood, adolescence, youth and even the little bit of maturity we already have with Hugo. He was the perfect, loyal friend, one of those who was there when he was really needed. That is never appreciated enough. He will simply always be in my prayers and memory. We were very happy together. That group of friends who met in the area called Caleton del Barranquillo was so fortunate and so fully happy that this hasty departure has left us disturbed.
After the first moment of sadness, we must keep the positive side: The luck I had to have Hugo as a friend. A privilege. Thank you Hugo for so many laughs, discussions, talks, trips, unforgettable moments. I always admired your responsibility, perseverance, perfectionism, convictions, your continuous personal demand to be a better person.
Lately with so much political mess that I've gotten into, I've had little time to enjoy your friendship, but I can't complain about that either, because we've spent so much time together that it wouldn't be fair. When two years ago I had my first rally, sweating and full of nerves, I went on stage, and there was my friend Hugo sitting among others, I mention this; because one's friends do not logically have to share beliefs or political battles, especially when he was neither from the PIL, nor did he share my opinion of Dimas Martín, but he was there to support his friend, and that of course is unforgettable.
Fifteen years ago, Hugo was Lanzarote's greatest and best hope to play a prominent role in the Ironman. Because of conditions and training, that's how it was. Perhaps his high degree of self-demand played against him. For me he was always an iron man, a friend in whom I could solidly and safely trust. As a friend, in recognition, I offer you the gold medal to the Ironman of friendship. As long as I live you will be in my memory, and there are many of us who will remember you. Thank you. Rest in peace.
