In memorian José Luis Yagüe

January 12 2022 (14:21 WET)

In the late 80s of the last century, being younger and newly incorporated into teaching, I met Yagüe. The San Bartolomé institute, of which he was the first director, had recently been inaugurated. Years later, in the early 90s, we coincided in the new Yaiza institute, he as director. I remember his tireless activity with the students organizing Canary Islands weeks, dinners for the educational community and many other festive and educational activities. He always demonstrated a desire and involvement beyond the ordinary. Highlight his enormous capacity for work and management. A professor very close to the students.

With great interest in study trips, he managed to take students several times to cultural routes around Europe. Always ready to help organize any activity, willing to give his time so that things went well.

A music lover, he promoted a student band in the past. He was part of several folk groups. He said that the flame had to be kept alive, otherwise this part of our cultural heritage would be lost.

As an English teacher, he trained a whole generation, when this language was a pending subject for the island society. He went through several centers, in addition to those already mentioned, he taught classes at the IES Agustín Espinosa, Blas Cabrera and Las Salinas, where he finally retired. He used to say "if the students master 500 words of the English language, they can already defend themselves and on the island there are many opportunities to learn them".

A man of short and long distance, thundering voice, friends of all. A lover of fishing and the sea, with a coastal spirit. A great conversationalist. A partygoer. A reference has left us, an endearing person, that type of professor that we will always remember.

Rest in peace.

Eduardo Núñez González.
