The planet celebrates World Down Syndrome Day every March 21 as a global call to generate greater public awareness, remembering the dignity and value of people with functional diversity. Thus, institutions and entities demand more support and attention to the integration of people into society. The Yaiza City Council and the Creciendo Social Association, already attached to Down Spain, emphasize diversity and inclusion, embracing the slogan Just like you.

Down Spain emphasizes that the Syndrome is not a disease, but a genetic variation, which has always been part of the human condition, exists in all regions of the world, and usually has variable effects on learning styles, physical characteristics, or health. As in any other group in society, individuals are diverse, and each has their unique talents, interests, and ways of being, but also many others that unite them.

People with Down Syndrome study, work, fall in love, have hobbies and dreams, just like everyone else. In addition, they bring an authentic, spontaneous, and valuable vision to our society; and their active participation in education, employment, art, sports, or any area is an example of overcoming and talent.

The message is clear and powerful: “Embrace diversity and focus on everything we have in common and not on what separates us. We must allow people to develop their potential to live autonomously and make their own decisions, giving them the opportunity to participate in all areas of life,” agree the director of Creciendo, Ligia Molnar, and the mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda.

Creciendo works throughout the year on projects that promote the autonomy and independent living of these people, such as PEVIR or IPEVIR, as well as programs that offer support within the classroom for educational inclusion and inclusive leisure and sports activities to improve their quality of life with opportunities for personal growth, supported by the Yaiza City Council and the Cabildo of Lanzarote.

To give even greater visibility to World Down Syndrome Day, the southern City Council will illuminate the Yaiza Windmill in blue and yellow until next weekend.
