The Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Directorate General of Environmental Quality, has established an alliance with the Canary Islands universities to foster practical specialized training in the area of land-based discharges to the sea, one of the strategic areas for the protection of the coastline and the improvement of the archipelago's environmental quality.

In this framework, the University of La Laguna, in collaboration with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and at the express request of the Directorate General of Environmental Quality, has launched a program of university micro-credentials focused on the integral management of land-based discharges to the sea. The initiative, in its first phase, includes three specialized training actions, 100% online, aimed at professionals and individuals interested in acquiring technical and regulatory skills in this field.

The courses that have formed the program defined between the academy and the regional administration are the “Micro-credential in regulations for the integral management of land-based discharges to the sea”, already held during this month of May; the “Micro-credential in characterization of land-based discharges to the sea”, currently in development; and the “Micro-credential in environmental studies prior to the authorization of land-based discharges to the sea”, whose teaching will begin on May 25 and interested parties can register at the following link

The Director General of Environmental Quality of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Montañés, highlighted that this collaboration “allows us to continue advancing in the professionalization and technical specialization of a fundamental area for the Canary Islands, such as the correct management of land-based discharges to the sea”. In this regard, he stressed that “the objective is to generate a network of competent and qualified professionals in the islands who can undertake the necessary projects related to land-to-sea discharges with the utmost technical solvency and ensuring maximum respect for our valuable marine ecosystem”.

Montañés also recalled that the authorization and control of land-based discharges to the sea constitute a key competence for the protection of the marine environment and the Canary Islands coastline, especially in an island territory with high pressure on the coast.

For her part, the professor at the University of La Laguna and academic co-director of the program, Cintia Hernández Sánchez, pointed out that “these micro-credentials are born with a clear practical and applied vocation, adapted to the real needs of administrations, consultancies, companies, and professionals working in the environmental and marine field”.

Likewise, she explained that “the training allows addressing everything from the current regulatory framework to the characterization procedures and the environmental studies necessary to process authorizations, also incorporating real cases and the current situation of discharges in the Canary Islands”.

The training actions have partial funding from the ‘Plan for the development of university micro-credentials’ of the University of La Laguna, framed within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and financed by the European Union-Next Generation EU, which allows for a considerable reduction in the enrollment cost for students.

With this initiative, the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy continues to promote technical training and knowledge transfer in collaboration with the university sector, favoring the creation of specialized profiles that contribute to improving the environmental management and sustainability of the Canary coast.
