The Tías City Council has had to withdraw a batch of food, which was destined for the neediest in the municipality, because it was affected by a weevil plague. On October 17, a specialized company proceeded to disinfect the premises where the food batches were stored.
According to a report from this company, the plague could have been transported in the last shipment of products, which took place in July, or it could have entered "before and over time" it could have been "proliferating". From Social Services they contacted "immediately" with the Red Cross, an organization that distributes food to communicate these facts and ask for guidelines on what to do with these products.
"The disinfection has been carried out in other institutions in Lanzarote with the same problem, according to what was stated by the personnel who carried it out", said a technician from the area, according to a press release sent by the City Council, in which no details are given about the institution that may have also suffered this situation.
These days, City Council workers have moved another batch of non-perishable food to other municipal dependencies for checking and verification. In this way, it will be determined whether or not it is affected by the same plague.
This will have to be verified by an expert from the Red Cross, as it is food belonging to the Food Plan of this NGO, which comes from the countries of the European Union, according to reports from the Consistory.
