The University of La Laguna (ULL) published last Tuesday the definitive list of candidates selected in the Canary Islands for the application of the Canary Islands Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030 on a local scale within the framework of the BarriODS project. The City Council of Tías has been one of the eight institutions selected to work in the Puerto del Carmen area.

The Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Research and Coordination of Sustainable Development and the University of La Laguna, presented the BarriODS project in March and opened the call to the 88 Canary Island municipalities. The results and lessons learned from this shared experience "will inspire the definition of a method or work pattern that can be disseminated throughout the region", they collect from the Tías City Council. The city councils that are attached or in the process of joining the Canary Islands Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030 were presented.

"The project promotes social intervention with a specialized technical team"

According to the University of La Laguna, "the project promotes a type of social intervention based on the community approach, in which a community is not only the recipient of the actions that are planned, but, above all, the protagonist of the definition and promotion of its own socio-territorial development process, organizing and optimizing its full potential".

Incorporation into the project implies "the possibility of having the intervention of a specialized technical team for six months, a period of time in which the formation of a reference group and its training will be promoted in each selected location", they clarify. "That group will add the participation of the local associative fabric, particularly the neighborhood and social fabric, an indispensable requirement for the configuration of each candidacy".

"The work process aims to conclude with the formulation of a community development strategy at the local level," says the ULL.

"Realization of a training program related to sustainability, to achieve more sustainable territories"

The results of the interventions in the selected locations will inspire "the elaboration of a guide or reference manual for the application of the Canary Islands Agenda 2030 on that neighborhood or town scale", they make clear. In parallel, BarriODS "contemplates the realization of a training program related to sustainability and the community approach in all the islands of the archipelago." It is especially aligned with Sustainable Development Goal number 11, which "aims to achieve more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable territories and communities."

"The project will be developed from the Social Innovation Area of the General Foundation of the University of La Laguna under the direction of Vicente Zapata Hernández," they confirm. "It has a work team made up of three professionals, responsible for the intervention in the eight selected neighborhoods or towns, the systematization of the experiences for the elaboration of the guide or reference manual, and the design and realization of the training processes," they add from the university.
