The Water Consortium of Lanzarote has processed more than 800 subsidy files to reduce the cost of agricultural irrigation in the island's primary sector, distributing a total of 241,485.38 euros among farmers.
These supports to reduce the cost of desalination and extraction of water from wells and galleries for agricultural irrigation in the Canary Islands will be delivered through the Water Consortium thanks to the subsidy granted at the end of the last year by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Water of the Government of the Canary Islands, to face the consumptions of 2020.
The regional call was published by the regional Ministry in the BOC number 93, through an Order of May 4, 2022. The Water Consortium of Lanzarote has been governed by this regulation for the distribution of aid that, for example, in the case of irrigation with desalinated water meant a total volume of 302,721 subsidized cubic meters.
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, has stressed that "these regional aid to reduce the cost of agricultural water, as well as other lines of support deployed from the island Institution itself, are essential to continue providing greater competitiveness to the activity in the sector, especially affected by the increase in production costs."
For his part, the delegate president of the Water Consortium, Andrés Stinga, thanked the involvement of the Canarian Executive to boost the primary sector, "on which thousands of families in the Archipelago depend"; and assured that from the direction of the Lanzarote Public Entity they will continue "in permanent dialogue with professionals to carry out the improvements already planned in the island's irrigation network.”
Nominated subsidies
"The amount of the subsidy distributed now, those 241,485.38 euros, has been established based on consumption and the type of water," they point out from the Water Consortium.
Finally, it should be noted that to annually renew this autonomous financing that reduces the costs of irrigation, the Water Consortium of Lanzarote regularly meets the requirements and conditions established by the Executive, controlling the realization of agricultural activity and compliance with the purpose pursued by the granting of the subsidy.
