The trade unions Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) and UGT estimate the support for the general strike in Lanzarote to be around 50 percent, according to the assessment made by both the island secretary of CCOO on the Island, Victoria Sande, and the secretary of UGT, César Reyes, before the departure of the demonstration from Calle Real in Arrecife.
The strike has been supported in a majority way in the cleaning services, garbage collection and on the buses of Arrecife, where only the minimum services have operated. The minimum services have also operated in Healthcare. In schools, there has been a lower attendance of children compared to the rest of the days, something that has been accentuated in the institutes.
The strike has not had much significance in the public administration. Both the Cabildo and the town halls opened, and many workers went to their jobs. In the Palace of Justice, work was carried out with total normality and the trials that were scheduled were held.
At the airport, not many flights were planned since Wednesdays usually have very little traffic in Guacimeta. Binter withdrew five flights, Islas Airways, three and two connections with the Peninsula were suspended. Some tour operators had previously moved their flights to Thursday.
There was also little traffic in the port of Los Mármoles. The cruise ship that made a stopover on Thursday morning operated normally and the tourists made the scheduled excursions. The Centers for Art, Culture and Tourism opened to the public, although there was little public attendance and high support for the strike. On the Fire Mountains, the bus tour was not carried out.
Closing to the passage of the pickets
Regarding commerce, the incidence of the strike affected a quarter of the establishments, especially those on the streets of the center of Arrecife, which were closing as the pickets of the unions passed. The strike had more impact on large businesses than on small ones.
Something similar happened in hotel and catering establishments. The impact was low in small establishments. It was greater in the Playa Blanca area, with a follow-up of a third of the workers, and traffic was temporarily cut off at Uga in the early morning. The unions had agreed on minimum services of four hours of work with the large hotel chains, which have been fulfilled.
Tranquility has been the predominant note throughout the morning. In the capital, traffic has decreased considerably in the morning and at around 9:00 a.m., Intersindical Canaria toured the streets of Arrecife with a caravan of cars.
