The Department of Sports of the Arrecife City Council has taken a further step in improving its sports facilities. The Titerroy Municipal Pavilion will have an anti-tip system on its goals, the first in the Canary Islands. In this way, the Consistory highlights that the capital of Lanzarote "would become a regional pioneer in the use of this mechanism, thus avoiding unexpected accidents."
This novelty will reinforce the safety of athletes. It will consist of completely covering the foot of the goal with a rubber cushion, which also reduces the risk of injury when accidentally hitting them. It also adds some bearing rollers, which allow the goal to have a sliding motion prior to tilting, preventing impact.
The mayor of Arrecife, Ástrid Pérez, who visited the pavilion together with the Councilor for Sports Roy González to see the improvements that have been made, highlighted that “during this term, all municipal sports facilities will undergo a good change." "The investment plan is underway. Athletes and visitors to the Titerroy Pavilion can see with their own eyes the current state and the terrible image it had a few months ago,” he stressed.
“This improvement allows us to take an important leap in terms of the quality of our facilities. We also become pioneers in the Canary Islands when it comes to using anti-tip systems in goals, improving the safety of our athletes and minimizing the risk of accidents,” highlighted the socialist Sports Councilor, Roy González.
“We entered with the clear commitment to improve the lives of the people of Arrecife and the sports facilities were a major pending issue. This improvement, together with those already made in the Titerroy Pavilion, will provide a good leap in quality that clubs and citizens will later enjoy,” the councilor highlighted.
Each year, nearly 7,000 children between the ages of 5 and 14 suffer serious injuries due to accidents with goals, according to statistics from the European Commission. The blows usually occur on the head, neck or chest. Since 2000, 18 minors have died from the fall of a goal or basketball hoop.
