The Government Delegate in the Canary Islands, Juan Salvador León, has informed the mayor of Arrecife, Eva de Anta, that the Ministry of Labor, Migration and Social Security, through the General Treasury of Social Security, will donate to the City Council the homes it owns in the Valterra neighborhood.
From the Government Delegation it is pointed out that "the 70 homes affected were built on land donated by the Arrecife City Council, financed by three canning companies, with the commitment on their part - through an agreement with a duration of forty years - that the homes would be awarded based on certain payment conditions to the workers of the canning companies themselves and to sea workers."
In this regard, he adds that the judicial process opened to resolve this conflict ended in 2017, with a ruling by the National Court by which the homes became the property of the Social Security assets.
A regulation with the rank of law to carry out the donation
In accordance with the Heritage Law and the Royal Decree of the Social Security Heritage, the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands explains that these homes cannot be delivered for profit to any person.
However, given that the land was donated by the Arrecife City Council at the time and that the construction was paid for by canning companies, so that the Social Marine Institute did not pay any amount, a regulation with the rank of Law will be proposed so that they can be donated to the Arrecife City Council and it can proceed with its award," on which the Ministry of Labor is already working", according to reports.
"This advances the resolution of a conflict that has been delayed over time, causing damage to those affected and in which the diligence and sensitivity of the Minister of Labor, Migration and Social Security, Magdalena Valerio, has been decisive, because as soon as the matter was transferred to her, she contacted the parties involved in order to find a solution," said the Government Delegate in the Canary Islands, Juan Salvador León.
