The president of the Security and Emergency Consortium of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Francisco Javier Aparicio, presented this morning the fifteenth edition of the Fire Prevention Week, "whose objective is to disseminate among the population, and fundamentally among the youngest, who are true educators of their family environment, the basic knowledge of self-protection in the event of a fire."
In this way, the initiative will reach thousands of schoolchildren who will participate during this week and until next Friday, November 27, in different simulations and workshops to learn how to handle a fire, recognize the risks and know how to act correctly.
This year, the XV Fire Prevention Week, which has the collaboration of the Lanzarote Health Area, the MAPFRE Foundation and the Professional Association of Fire Technicians (APTB) will be marked by anti-covid protocols. The island director of the Health Area, Noelia Umpiérrez, thanked the heads of the Security Consortium "for the excellent work they do throughout the year in prevention, so that society acquires good habits and knows how to face emergency situations in a more effective way."
For his part, César Alonso Cabrera, director of MAPFRE in Lanzarote, said that "this type of activities reinforces our commitment to the well-being of people, contributing to improve their quality of life." In this sense, MAPFRE and APTB have collaborated with the Security and Emergency Consortium in the edition of several short videos with basic safety tips, since there are many people who die each year as a result of fires in their own homes, often caused by oversights.
Program of activities
After the presentation of the program of the Fire Prevention Week 2020, the first fire evacuation drill took place at the CEIP Nieves Toledo in Arrecife, adapted to the anticovid protocols, where a total of 650 schoolchildren participated, as well as the teaching staff and staff of the center.
The fire broke out in the Medusa Classroom and two teachers were affected by smoke inhalation, one of them becoming unconscious. Among the material and human deployment that participated in the drill, the following stand out: Fire Department, National Police, Local Police, together with the Drone Unit, Red Cross, Emerlan and Civil Protection, as well as a fire truck and two ambulances.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 24, the online training on fire prevention aimed at the state security forces and bodies will start.
