The Popular Party Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa has presented a motion to the next plenary session of the corporation in which they request that the Animal Welfare Area be provided with the necessary human resources for its proper functioning.
The spokesperson for the popular ones, Ángel Vázquez, points out that it was the CEO herself, Elena Solís, who in a recent interview, recognized that the area had been transferred to her without personnel, so very little could be done from Animal Welfare. “The truth is that we have to recognize the counselor's sincerity in her statements, but we cannot stay there since the really important thing is that the lack of workers is corrected as soon as possible in order to carry out some actions in what remains of the mandate”, Vázquez points out.
For the counselor “it is totally absurd that in 2019 an area was created because it was believed necessary for the protection and defense of animals and three years later we find a ghost department because there is no assigned personnel”.
“As of today, and if we take stock, the only thing that has been effective regarding Animal Welfare has been to approve a motion, in September 2020, to urge the Government of the Canary Islands to update the Animal Protection Law and for that, of course, it is clear that a separate department is not needed”, Vázquez reproaches the government. “Talking about protocols, strategies or awareness for greater and better animal care is very good and looks perfect to the citizens, but getting involved and setting an example is another thing, and of course, in setting a good example in this matter, the current government of Psoe and Podemos can give very little example”, concludes the PP counselor
