The Popular Party group believes that "housing in the capital is excessively expensive" and has stated that "those who have governed Arrecife for the last 12 years have not promoted or built new social housing". Thus, the popular ones criticize that after nine months, the Government group of the municipality formed by PIL and PSOE "has not been able to execute or develop" actions in housing matters, and have recalled that the Autonomous Government has a budget of more than 3 million euros for this purpose.
The PP spokesman in the City Council, Cándido Reguera, pointed out that "the budget of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands includes a budget item of 2,150,000 euros for the construction of public promotion homes, as well as 762,200 euros for the self-construction of homes and another 300,000 euros for the promotion of public housing". Therefore, for Reguera "if the Arrecife City Council does not provide the land necessary for the construction of this type of housing, the money from the Government of the Canary Islands would be lost for the citizens of Arrecife".
Likewise, Cándido Reguera stressed that "investment in social housing would help alleviate the economic difficulties we are currently suffering, would generate greater economic development in the capital of Lanzarote and, as a consequence, an increase in the number of employees", he argued before the current number of unemployed which stands at more than 9,000, according to Reguera's data. Therefore, the opposition considers "urgent measures to alleviate this situation" are necessary.
The motion presented by the Popular Party also urges the Arrecife City Council to enable public land for the self-construction of homes and that, in coordination with the Ministry of Social Welfare and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands, manage a promotion of public land supply and economic aid for self-construction.
Finally, the popular ones also request that "a specific economic line be created to facilitate young people's access to housing" to enable their emancipation.
