The Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital has completely renovated the equipment of the digestive endoscopy unit with the incorporation of five "state-of-the-art" endoscopy towers. According to the Ministry of Health, the new devices make it possible to carry out tests such as Echoendoscopy, which until now have only been carried out in the reference hospitals of the archipelago, thus avoiding the transfer of patients from the island.

The new equipment for performing colonoscopies and endoscopies represents an "important improvement" in the tools for diagnosing and treating diseases of the digestive system. "This is state-of-the-art technology that significantly improves the quality of the image, an aspect that facilitates the early diagnosis of malignant diseases and helps detect various lesions that are difficult to visualize in classic endoscopes," explains the Ministry.

As detailed, the endoscopy towers consist of all the necessary devices to perform endoscopic examinations and treatments, such as a 32-inch LCD monitor with high-definition image quality and an image video processor with a light source, which facilitates better visualization of the digestive tract and favors a much more accurate diagnosis. These devices "also provide greater comfort to the patient due to the use of CO2 to distend the colon, which significantly improves recovery after the test."

One of these devices has been prepared for use in the emergency service, which "greatly" facilitates the diagnosis of gastrointestinal disorders that can be detected and treated.

Professionals from the Digestive section

The professionals of the Digestive section point out that the new equipment will allow in the future to perform echoendoscopy tests at the Molina Orosa, for which patients were previously referred to the reference hospital in Gran Canaria. This test allows direct visualization of the inside of the digestive system and determines more precisely the depth reached by a lesion, whether in the esophagus, stomach, duodenum or rectum, and is also less invasive. They also highlight the capacity they provide to the service to carry out a greater number of cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), a fundamental mixed test to study and treat diseases of the bile ducts and pancreas, which on many occasions also required the transfer of the patient.

The manager of Health Services of Lanzarote, José Luis Aparicio, points out the effort made for the acquisition of this equipment with an investment of close to one million euros and is convinced that the new devices will contribute to streamlining the tests and improving the quality of the service that the hospital provides to patients, while promoting the development of measures such as the Early Detection Program for Colorectal Cancer launched by the General Directorate of Assistance Programs of the Canary Health Service.
