The historic complex of La Villa de Teguise and other towns in the municipality, such as El Mojón, Los Valles, Muñique, Teseguite, Soo, or Tahiche, celebrate during these days their traditional enramado de las cruces, one of the most deeply rooted manifestations with the greatest local identity. While some towns have already carried out the enramado, others will continue with this tradition throughout the weekend.
The celebration of the Day of the Cross, once again filled the streets of the historic complex with flowers from the morning of last Thursday, April 30, with the participation of students and teachers from various educational centers, until the afternoon, when associations, collectives, and neighbors joined the adorning.
The mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque, valued "the large turnout of people who have filled the streets of the town to participate in the enramado", and sent a message of thanks for joining "an encounter of coexistence and meeting between neighbors of the municipality".
He stressed that the Day of the Cross is a celebration that "helps us reclaim our history and roots," and highlighted that these are days that allow us "to keep our customs alive, take care of our identity, and transmit to new generations the value of what unites us as a people."
The Councilor for Culture, Andoni Machín, highlighted the great participation of both the municipality's citizens and associations and collectives in making the "enramado de las cruces" (decoration of the crosses) "a day that values what is ours and unites different generations through a tradition with deep roots in Teguise".
He recalled the importance of this tradition for the rest of the island, which "has become a notable date on which the population of Lanzarote visits Teguise to admire its crosses".
The "enramado" has counted on the participation of neighbors and the presence of different schools, associations, and collectives, such as CEIP Guatiza and Doctor Alfonso Spínola, the Folk Group La Gran Aldea, the Parranda de Mayores ‘Virgen de Guadalupe’, AFOL, the Doctor Domingo Guzmán residence, the D. Julio Santiago Obesa Psychosocial Rehabilitation Unit, the Las Cabreras and Isla de los Volcanes day centers, the Folk Group Guanapay or Cáritas Parroquial.
