The general strike day has begun in Lanzarote with more police presence on the streets and without incidents, according to unions and employers. However, there is no agreement at the moment on the participation that is being registered. For now, neither party provides concrete figures, although the business sector indicates that the adherence is low.
The president of Felapyme, Alberto Morales, explained on Radio Lanzarote that almost all businesses plan to open their doors, with the exception of a few that could close for fear of the consequences.
The president of the construction employers' association, Neftalí Acosta, said along the same lines that "very few workers" are supporting the strike. In addition, he pointed out that, fearing possible pickets, some employees have reached an agreement with their company not to work during this day, but to recover the hours another day later.
Regarding these statements, the general secretary of Comisiones Obreras in Lanzarote, Vicky Sande, has shown her disagreement, denying that anyone has been intimidated or pressured to join the strike. Sande assures that there will be no violent act, that the pickets are "only to inform" and that anyone who wants to can go to their job.
For its part, and in reference to participation, UGT has highlighted that the strike is having a special impact on the garbage collection service. According to César Reyes, adherence to the strike has been "total" in four municipalities: Tías, Teguise, Tinajo, San Bartolomé.
Tourism
One of the sectors that may be most affected during this day is tourism, and for this reason the Cabildo has created a crisis cabinet to monitor the incidents of the strike and try to minimize its impact. The Minister of Tourism, Carmen González, highlighted that they are especially aware of how it may affect the departure and arrival of ships and planes, and also the land transfers of tourists who had to go to the port or airport this Wednesday.
Regarding the arrival of cruise ships, an arrival was scheduled in Arrecife this morning and, as the Minister explained, the shipping company has decided to cancel all planned excursions on the island to avoid problems.
For its part, Aetur also expects a quiet day and the president of this association, Victoriano Elvira, pointed out that the owners of bars and restaurants have tried to organize themselves to continue working despite the fact that some of their workers decide to join the strike.
