The former manager of Urbaser in Lanzarote, Jacinto Álvarez, his wife, his two children and the businessman Fernando González Berriel, declare this Thursday before the Court of First Instance number 3 of Arrecife accused of the crimes of misappropriation, fraud, document forgery and contractual simulation. González Berriel, Álvarez and the latter's wife, Zenaida Alcaide, will testify this Thursday from 9:00 a.m., while Álvarez's two children, Joaquín and Itziar, will do so on Friday at the same time.
The procedure stems from a complaint by the company Urbaser in September 2010 and is related to the alleged diversion of funds from the company by the manager through invoices that could be false or for services not performed.
Jacinto Álvarez is one of the main people involved in Operation Jable, which investigates the alleged fixing of the Urbaser road cleaning, garbage collection and garden contract with the Arrecife City Council. According to the Civil Guard investigation, Urbaser, through Álvarez, would have been bribing various public officials and Arrecife officials to extend these contracts.
The former Urbaser manager was arrested in April 2009 and sent to provisional prison. The Civil Guard found a notebook in which Álvarez wrote down all the payments, gifts and requests from the former mayor of Arrecife, María Isabel Déniz, and other officials. Thanks to the notebook and Álvarez's statements, several Urbaser executives were arrested for allegedly being involved in the case. During the investigation, five senior Urbaser officials have been arrested.
After these events, the company fired Álvarez. In October 2010, the Social Court number 1 of Arrecife deemed his dismissal appropriate. Another worker stated that he presented fuel consumption invoices that were used to charge the private cell phones of Jacinto Álvarez's family.
