The discharge of sewage that appeared on New Year's Day in the vicinity of the Hotel Fariones on Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen was resolved yesterday thanks to the work of Aguas Filtradas and the technicians of the City Council of Tías, who finally located the origin of the discharge after more than two days of searching.
As the mayor of the southern municipality, José Juan Cruz Saavedra, revealed this Wednesday in statements to LA VOZ, the escape of the foul-smelling water came from an old blind well built in 1967 and out of operation a long time ago.
At first it was believed that the break was in the Fariones' canalisation system, but that possibility was later ruled out. After checking the pumping station and the municipal canalisation, it was certified with the help of a machine that it was an old well that was filtering the sewage to the surface of the sand.
Aid to university students
The City Council of Tías has transferred 110,000 euros to the bank accounts of 235 students of the municipality who have applied for grants for university studies. Of the total number of students who have obtained the grant, 179 have received the maximum amount stipulated at 550 euros, eleven people have received 400 euros and another 45 have had to settle for 300 euros. These grants depend on the socio-economic conditions of the students' families, who have to submit data on their income and family assets when applying.
Most of the students are enrolled in the Canary Islands universities, although there are also young people developing their studies in Madrid, Barcelona, Granada, Valencia and Salamanca, among others.
The mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz Saavedra, has assured that this year 20 more university students have applied for the grants than last year and that it is planned to increase the budget in the coming years to cover this need. Cruz Saavedra highlighted the commitment that the City Council has maintained with the university students of the municipality in recent years and referred to this grant as an important investment in the future, because the training of these young people will benefit the municipality.
