The Civil Guard, in a II phase of Operation Unión that has been developing in Lanzarote, has arrested during the morning of this Thursday in the provinces of Las Palmas and Tarragona six more people for various crimes related to corruption and urban planning. Among those arrested is a developer and builder from Lanzarote, as well as five other businessmen, some of them members of the island's Chamber of Commerce.

The agents have carried out searches during this Thursday in the dependencies of the City Council of Yaiza and its Technical Office, as well as the homes of several of the detainees and the headquarters of different development companies.

The detainees are charged with, among others, several crimes of bribery and influence peddling.

According to an official press release made public by the Ministry of the Interior, "the main suspect is accused of having offered significant allegedly illegal commissions, monetary or in kind, to a member of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and several members of the Plenary of the Chamber of Commerce, in exchange for adopting various decisions for the benefit of their economic interests".

It is also being investigated "to what extent he may have influenced several public officials of the City Council of Yaiza, municipality in which one of his most important urban developments is located, to guarantee its future development within the new General Plan of Urban Planning of said City Council".

The operation continues to be carried out by members of the Urban Crime Group of the Central Operative Unit of the Civil Guard, under the direction of the Investigating Court number 5 of Arrecife and the Prosecutor's Office for the Environment and Urban Planning of Las Palmas.

The investigation continues under summary secrecy and is still open, so new arrests and/or charges are not ruled out.
