The Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Water, has resumed the improvement works on the sanitation and water purification of the municipality of Tinajo, after they were suspended last April to adjust the project to the new needs detected.
The objective of these works is to provide the area with a new general sanitation collector and connect it to the La Santa Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). Added to this is an extension at the head of the collector, the execution of a connection network of domestic connections under the sidewalk and the installation within the WWTP of a propulsion system by pumping the water that reaches the pre-treatment.
The Councilor of the Area, José Antonio Valbuena, highlighted the importance of adapting the network in order to “provide the citizens of the area with a sanitation and purification system according to their needs, well done and that can provide a good service for a long period”. As he added, currently the efforts have focused on expanding the pipelines of the population center towards the Wastewater Treatment Plant of La Santa.
For his part, the general director of Water of the Government of the Canary Islands, Víctor Navarro, explained that the rethinking of the project, of which a part has already been executed, “has allowed adding, for example, the discharge fee for various waste; electrical installations and guides and anchoring supports for the impulsion pumps; the dismantling of the previous PVC sanitation pipes; the demolition of a concrete slab on a sanitation channel that must be removed; the execution of the needs specified by the Roads Area of the Island Council or the execution of a retaining wall of a road, which yielded during the execution of the works”.
In addition, it has been used to increase preventive measures against the risks of accidents and diseases by incorporating new health and safety units.
The modification of the project, awarded to VVO Construcciones y Proyectos, S.A. in September 2019, has meant an increase of 17.65% of the budget, which amounts to 622,513.49 euros and an extension of three months in the execution period.
State of the works
Víctor Navarro has indicated that works have already been carried out for an amount exceeding 245,000 euros. “The awarded company has already completed the channeling to the treatment plant that runs through 548 meters of the El Cuchillo road and 754 meters of the La Santa road, with the connection to it pending,” he said.
Regarding the impulsion of the WWTP, the preliminary earthmoving work has already begun in coordination with Canal Gestión and the Lanzarote Water Consortium.
The extension at the head of the general sanitation collector was pending the rethinking due to the specifications requested from the Roads Area of the Island Council of Lanzarote, mainly those related to the completion of the paving to the full section of the road that is affected by the execution of the channeling between the avenue of Mancha Blanca and the avenue of the volcanoes.
