The Education Councilor of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Francisco Cabrera, has announced that the regulations for transportation aid for university students will be modified. According to him, the proposal will soon be taken to the Education Commission, and then to the Governing Council.
This announcement comes after several students reported to La Voz that the Cabildo is now demanding proof of the transportation aid they were granted in 2008, otherwise they would have to return the grant money. A measure that surprised the students because they had to present the tickets two years later. "Where am I going to get the tickets now?" one student asked. "It's a disgrace," said another.
According to Cabrera, the Cabildo's intention is to modify the regulations "regarding the levels of demand for providing justifications for future calls." Thus, "a sworn statement" would be incorporated, so that if students do not have the tickets, they can state the reason why they do not have them.
Now students have to present the transportation receipts corresponding to the 2008/2009 academic year. And, if they do not have them, they should go to the Cabildo's Scholarship department, where "they will be explained how they can justify or what they should claim," explains Cabrera. "I don't think anyone has to return the money."
