The new Honors and Distinctions Regulations of the Cabildo of Lanzarote "will represent a great leap towards gender equality", after the agreement adopted this Monday by the Governing Council of the First Island Corporation. This was highlighted by the president, María Dolores Corujo, who emphasizes that "not a single woman has been recognized by the successive Regulations of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, despite the fact that more than fifty years have passed since the first one came into force, in the mid-sixties of the 20th century."
From the Corporation they point out that the president herself has been "the promoter" of this change. Once it comes into effect, "the concessions will attend to parity with respect to gender, as well as to criteria of equal opportunities for people who, in their tasks, are deserving of these Honors and Distinctions," explained Corujo. On the other hand, given the restrictive nature of the new Regulations, the achievement of parity will be established in the perspective of the four years that each term lasts in the Cabildo.
Up to the present moment, six men have been declared Favorite Sons, four men have been recognized as Adoptive Sons and four men have been distinguished with the Gold Medals. In addition, the title of Honorary Advisor has been awarded to two men.
Along with this change in the field of Equality, the new Regulations that are being processed introduce and differentiate new Distinctions in several fields: Social, Economic, Sports, Traditional Culture, Tourism, Humanitarian, International Solidarity, Educational and Sustainability.
The Honors and Distinctions that the Cabildo of Lanzarote can grant annually are intended to recognize and reward special merits, outstanding benefits or extraordinary services and actions in favor of the island.
