The Cabildo will finance “a clean layout with no visual impact" for the power line in Yaiza

"There is no room for pylons," Corujo reiterated, "but there is room for burying the power lines in the areas of high environmental, natural and historical value in the municipality of Yaiza.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, held a meeting with the mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, and technical representatives of Red Eléctrica Endesa (REE) in which she announced the willingness of the First Institution to finance “a clean layout with no visual impact for the new power line project in Yaiza."

During the meeting, Corujo invited to “apply technical and administrative formulas that allow Lanzarote to continue being a differential destination and an international example in terms of territorial protection and environmental sustainability.” “There is no room for pylons," she reiterated, “but there is room for burying the power lines in the areas of high environmental, natural and historical value in the municipality of Yaiza.”

To this end, the president is committed to financing a project that has a budget of more than 10 million euros. “We cannot look the other way in the face of environmental threats of this magnitude as was done in the past. We have reached this situation due to the inaction of those previously responsible for the Cabildo and their refusal to appeal this project, but today we want to get even more involved if possible and supervise the evolution of the works to protect emblematic areas of high landscape value on our island and avoid any irreparable damage. We are willing to assume a part of this investment to minimize the impact of this project on places of such environmental and historical significance as the Natural Monument of Los Ajaches and the nucleus of Femés,” she insisted.

Start of works in Fuerteventura

The works of the Red Eléctrica de España (REE) project to reinforce the Lanzarote - Fuerteventura line at 132 kilovolts have already begun in Fuerteventura, and are scheduled to begin in the nucleus of Playa Blanca in the coming months. In this sense, Corujo has once again extended a hand to Noda to create a common front “and redefine the strategic lines of this project and suggest alternatives to bury the power lines in those areas that we consider key.”
