The Cabildo of Lanzarote has agreed this Tuesday to the recognition of the Arrecife cemetery, during the celebration of the extraordinary plenary session. As reported by the highest island body in a note, the main objective of adopting this measure is to convert this space into an Island Cemetery and, consequently, "to be able to undertake the necessary expansion."
The president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, explained that "the determination of the capital's cemetery as the General Island System that the Island Plan of Ordination of Lanzarote (PIOL) calls Island Cemetery allows the City Council to have no impediment in the procedure of modification of its planning and execute the much-needed expansion of this space."
The Island Plan of Ordination of Lanzarote includes this cemetery as a General Island System. According to the legal framework, the General Island System must be located in the population centers and, exceptionally, in the rustic land outside the population centers, and in the category of residual rustic land (current common rustic land).
The land on which the expansion of the Arrecife cemetery has to be developed is classified as rustic land for environmental protection, which generally prevents a Local General System or an Island General System from being developed on it.
In the search for a legal mechanism to circumvent these impediments, the Cabildo determined that this proposal allows the City Council to have no island impediment in the procedure of modifying its planning and execute the much-needed expansion.
The decision adopted, however, guarantees the most absolute legal certainty, allowing the City Council of Arrecife to solve a problem that runs the risk of becoming pressing.
