The Nationalist Group (CC-PNC) in the Cabildo of Lanzarote regrets that "the neglect and disinterest of the Government Group led by the socialist M.ª Dolores Corujo, forces the institution to return to the Government of the Canary Islands the subsidy of 700,000 euros granted in June 2019, coinciding with the inauguration of the current government, for the execution of an environmental recovery plan for the island of La Graciosa."
A year and a half later, the actions included in said plan have not materialized within the planned deadlines, so the first institution must return the full amount to the Ministry of Ecological Transition, the fight against climate change and territorial planning of the Canarian Executive.
The nationalists recall that approximately one year ago (February 2020) they requested through a motion that a vital project for the island of La Graciosa be resumed, which, in addition to the financial file of the Government of the Canary Islands, also had the commitment of co-financing from the Teguise City Council and the first island institution, as agreed during the previous term.
“The ineffectiveness of the current government has led to the loss of a unique opportunity for La Graciosa to improve its urban and natural landscape, with the cleaning of the beaches and the coastline, as well as the management of waste accumulated in the urban environment”, said the CC-PNC councilor Domingo Cejas.
The project described the recovery work needed in the towns of Caleta del Sebo and Pedro Barba, cleaning of beaches in the urban area and coastal cleaning, as well as waste management, especially in urban plots where an urgent shock plan is needed to transfer the accumulated construction and demolition waste, iron, wood, vehicle remains, plastics, etc. to the authorized manager or the Zonzamas complex.
The initiative also foresaw the hiring of a crew for 6 months, the commissioning of various intervention projects in the deteriorated public space, as well as the hiring of a multidisciplinary team to prepare an ordinance, without forgetting an important citizen awareness campaign on the need to not repeat the deplorable image offered by some of the island's urban plots.
However, CC points out, "this is just another example of the neglect and apathy of a government that lives for the gallery and in constant propaganda campaigns. This has meant that La Graciosa, a unique enclave in the largest Marine Reserve in Europe, has lost a golden opportunity."
