The Cabildo asks the Hispania Nostra association to remove the Zonzamas site from its red list

Ariagona González expresses her "incomprehension" that it is "now" when the association has denounced the situation of the site, when "since 2015, and after 20 years of abandonment, the archaeological works of this area have been promoted"

The Cabildo of Lanzarote has requested the removal of the archaeological site of Zonzamas from the red list of the Hispania Nostra association, which includes those heritage elements that are at risk for their conservation.

In this regard, the institution defends its management in the conservation work that it has been carrying out "since 2015" at this site, with the aim of recovering and disseminating the historical and cultural heritage of the island.

In this sense, the Councilor for Heritage, Ariagona González, states that "after 20 years of political and technical abandonment, the corporation has promoted the works, which have revealed that the site is more extensive than initially assessed and that the wealth of remains it treasures is even greater than expected.”

Therefore, the councilor expresses her "incomprehension" that it is “now” when the Hispania Nostra association has denounced the situation of the site. González also regrets that this association did not contact the Cabildo of Lanzarote to request information in this regard and therefore requests the removal of the archaeological site of Zonzamas from the red list of Hispania Nostra.

The Councilor for Heritage explains that the master plan of the works includes a roadmap prepared and partly implemented, which consists of two phases.

The first is the one referring to the construction of a site museum, “a project that has already been drafted and awaiting its execution, pending since 2018 by the General Directorate of Heritage of the Government of the Canary Islands”. The second phase consists of covering the discovered deep houses, “in order to preserve them from the adverse effects of the weather.”

Ariagona González indicates that, once the current soundings are completed, light will be shed on the real dimensions of the site and it will be at that moment when the vestiges will be covered appropriately. “This action will be undertaken during this year”, she clarifies.
