The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Department of Social Welfare led by Marci Acuña, has approved this Monday in the Governing Council the implementation of the program Prevention of suicidal behavior and promotion of mental health in centers that teach Compulsory Secondary Education on the island.
This agreement establishes the collaboration between the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Official College of Psychology of Las Palmas, for the implementation of a program aimed at developing different actions that enable the educational community, through training activities and advice, of resources and strategies to address the promotion of mental health and prevention and intervention on suicidal behavior in educational centers of Lanzarote.
The Minister of Social Welfare and Inclusion, Marci Acuña, has expressed that "it is essential to provide tools and resources for the early detection of risk behaviors, adequate intervention and referral to specialized services when necessary, in addition to raising awareness about the importance of mental health and reducing the stigma associated with psychological problems through training and counseling activities".
"From the Cabildo we have already allocated a subsidy of 300,000 euros to the Official College of Psychology of Las Palmas to ensure the execution of the program, allowing the training of educational personnel, access to specialized advice and the implementation of prevention strategies adapted to the reality of the youth of Lanzarote", Acuña pointed out.
The agreement, which formalizes the collaboration between administrations and the Official College of Psychology of Las Palmas, will provide the development of training activities for teachers, prevention protocols and awareness in the 23 secondary schools of Lanzarote.
The agreement is part of the Suicide Behavior Plan in the Canary Islands and the Mental Health Strategy of the National Health System 2022-2026, aligning with public policies aimed at protecting the well-being of the young population.
