The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, held a meeting this Thursday with mayors, mayoresses and health authorities, and, electronically, with the Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, Blas Trujillo, to assess the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Island.
Dolores Corujo, in agreement with the councilors of the seven municipalities, insisted on asking for "prudence and responsibility" from the people of Lanzarote during the end-of-year festivities and during the remainder of the Christmas holidays, "with the common goal of stopping the worrying increase in infections in Lanzarote together."
"We are in a complicated situation, with the recent rise in the level of health alert on our Island and the predominance of the omicron strain in the Canary Islands, so we must show commitment to the measures issued by the health authorities and wait during these special dates so as not to put our health and the future of our economy at risk," the president stressed.
On the other hand, Dolores Corujo reminded, especially the young population, of the importance of continuing to get vaccinated, given that a large part of the number of infections in the Canary Islands corresponds to people between 20 and 40 years old. She also asked that parents continue to go with their sons and daughters to the health centers so that they receive the guideline, and that people who can already receive the third dose proceed to do so.
"Another of our concerns raised by the mayors and mayoresses has been the possibility of unifying criteria in events of these dates, such as the Three Kings parades, and it has been agreed that appropriate decisions will be made to not put collective health at risk and to avoid crowds as much as possible, always prioritizing the safety of the neighbors," the president pointed out.
Regarding the new strain, Trujillo explained the danger of transmission it represents, being up to 70 times more contagious than others, despite being less lethal.
This Thursday, Lanzarote had 322 new positives. In this way, the active cases amount to 1,674 as of today, with an accumulated incidence at seven days of 908 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. However, as the regional Minister of Health detailed, the increase in alert level is currently governed by a more determining indicator than the number of infections: hospital occupancy.
In that sense, Lanzarote currently has eleven people admitted to the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital with coronavirus, one of them, a 62-year-old man, in the ICU.
