The Cabildo of Lanzarote is making progress on the project of 'Modernization and improvement of irrigation in the northeast area of the Island'. The Corporation points out that this intervention, which will be carried out in the municipalities of Tinajo and Teguise, is promoted by the General Directorate of Agriculture of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands.
"After a complicated administrative procedure, the formulation of the environmental impact report has already been obtained," says the president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo. "This action makes it possible to advance in a project that is highly demanded by farmers in the northeast area, who will see their water costs reduced since the irrigated plots will be supplied with water from desalination," says Corujo.
Likewise, the president emphasizes that with this project "progress is being made in improving the water efficiency of irrigation in the northeast area of Lanzarote."
From the Cabildo they explain that the planned actions contemplate the unification of several projects such as the irrigation network, which includes "the head ponds, the construction of the desalination plant (SWRO), the installation of the wind turbine adjacent to the SWRO, and the installation of a submarine outfall to expel the brine water from the SWRO to the sea".
Finally, they point out from the Corporation that in the surroundings of the action there are "six protected areas belonging to the Natura 2000 Network", three of them coinciding with spaces included in the Canary Islands Network of Protected Natural Spaces.
