Operatives from the Arrecife City Council have walled up the last house attached to the La Destila school. This Tuesday was the deadline given by the judge to evict this house, although the person who resided in it does not even live in Lanzarote now.
The house that has been walled up is located on a second floor and the operatives needed a crane to carry out this action. During the work, José Antonio street had to be closed, according to the City Council.
This was the last house to be walled up in the La Destila school, which from now on will finally be able to face its demolition. The Arrecife City Council will send all the technical reports and certificates to the General Directorate of Educational Infrastructure of the Canary Islands Government so that it can award the demolition of these houses.
According to the Councilor for Education, Paca Toledo, this educational infrastructure has been waiting for years for the lawsuit with the occupants of the houses to be resolved, "for its demolition and construction of a new building with the services of a 21st century school."
The future school
The project contemplates the construction, in a first phase, of a three-story school building. In a second phase, the students will move to it, for the demolition of the current educational center, in whose plot the administration area, sports courts and dining room will be built.
"Justice is finally done with the residents of La Destila, who have been waiting for years for a decent school for their children. The process has been long but it has been carried out with all the guarantees," explains the councilor.
Paca Toledo trusts that the Vice-Ministry of Education of the Canary Islands Government, which has been "sensitive at all times to this issue", will "carry out the procedures for the demolition of the building and the construction of the future school as soon as possible."
