The Social Welfare Area of the Teguise City Council has joined the Spanish Federation of Food Banks to create one in Costa Teguise. This body, which is managed by the City Council with human resources and municipal infrastructure, is supplied by donations from companies, as well as individuals. The project began in December 2010 and Teguise has already received more than 800 kilos of food, which will help 30 families per month.
The City Council's technicians prepare the reports of the families who request some type of assistance. "When they are favorable, we provide them with the support we can and complete it with the food bag," explains Councilor Marisol Armas.
This proposal is currently only being carried out by the Teguise and Yaiza City Councils, in Lanzarote. "It is important that it is launched, because it is about receiving, on the one hand, the food sent by the European Union for this purpose completely free of charge and, on the other hand, the City Council is responsible for managing the goodwill of many businessmen and individuals who sometimes do not know how to help," Armas insisted. "In the end, we all benefit, mainly the families who need it, and that is the only objective," the councilor pointed out.
The service managed by the City Council is located behind the municipal office of Costa Teguise. The Food Bank of Spain was founded in 1996, exists in 18 countries, and currently distributes through 25,000 non-profit institutions 274,000 tons of food and it is estimated that it serves 4.3 million people.
