The mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort, is on an official visit to Uruguay on the occasion of the commemoration of the 600th anniversary of the Royal Villa of Teguise, whose union with the South American country dates back to the early years of the founding of Montevideo, since families from Teguise were on the ship Nuestra Señora de Encina, which departed from Santa Cruz de Tenerife on August 21, 1726.

To stage the twinning between Teguise and the Uruguayan people, which has been echoed by the international press through the EFE Agency, the President of the Republic, Tabaré Vázquez, has received Oswaldo Betancort to "merge again in the warmest and most endearing of the embraces of universal fraternity", as published in 1964 by the weekly "Antena" in homage to Doctor Alfonso Spínola. In that year, the Canary Islands Society of Uruguay donated the bust of Dr. Spínola to the city of Teguise, made by Serapio Pérez, also from Teguise and residing in Uruguay.

During this official visit, Oswaldo Betancort, accompanied by the official chronicler of the municipality, Francisco Hernández, conveyed to Tabaré Vázquez the actions that are being carried out in Teguise to recover and make its history last forever, through relevant figures such as Alfonso Espínola. They also recalled the close ties between both peoples during the migratory period of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, in which 12,500 people arrived from the Canary Islands. As a result of this historical milestone, there have been many acts of twinning between both peoples, which is now confirmed by the presence of the Teguise delegation in Uruguay, headed by the mayor of Teguise, "in which the interest and affection on the part of the Uruguayan authorities and the strong thread of union between Teguise and the Republic have been demonstrated," said Betancort.
