The San Bartolomé City Council will request permission from the Government Delegation to place surveillance cameras in the municipality, after the fires caused on Sunday morning in Playa Honda. “There will always be fools and we have to encourage citizen security”, the mayor, Isidro Pérez, stated on Radio Lanzarote – Onda Cero.
The mayor assures that it is not the first time that it has been requested, since at the time the request “was rejected” since the Government Delegation maintained that this type of camera violated the privacy of citizens. “It is not for the control of those who are walking down the street”, stated the mayor, who emphasizes the need for this mechanism to ensure citizen security.
Isidro Pérez maintains that the Council will carry out “a study” to find out which are the specific points in the municipality where these surveillance cameras could be placed. “We cannot have a police officer on every street, but we can look for other tools that allow us to have control of certain specific points”, explained the mayor.
In the early hours of Sunday a total of 14 waste collection containers were burned in Playa Honda, burning 4 paper and cardboard recycling containers, 4 plastic packaging containers and 6 rear-loading garbage containers. In addition, a vehicle was completely burned in Fayna street, affecting the same fire to an aluminum pergola of a house, and to a lamppost on the road, which affected the lighting of several streets. Another of the fires, in Velamen street, also affected three other vehicles, one of them a motorhome.
The mayor claims to have “certain indications” of who the perpetrators of these fires may be, which he says were carried out in an “organized” and “intentional” manner, since between the first fire and the second there was a distance of “more than a kilometer and a half”.
In fact, Isidro Pérez has explained that over the last year they have managed to arrest two arsonists. One of them, the mayor assures, was thanks to the citizen collaboration of a resident of Playa Honda, who identified the author, while the other was intercepted by the Local Police while carrying out one of the fires.
Pérez assures that he is “at the disposal of the citizens” to be able to solve this problem, even assuring that on Monday he visited the house affected by the fire, and inviting citizen collaboration so that this event does not happen again.
“Whoever did this in Playa Honda, surely has done it before, and let's hope it's the last time”, the mayor sentenced.
