Political parties, businessmen and unions accuse PP of breaking the consensus on the Autonomy of the Port

The Socialist Party, the Canarian Coalition, the Assembly for Lanzarote, the Lanzarote Business Confederation and the trade unions Comisiones Obreras and UGT have signed this Tuesday a joint document criticizing the Non-Law Proposal submitted to Congress by the deputy of the Popular Party, Cándido Reguera, urging the creation of a Port Authority for the Port of Arrecife. According to the politicians, businessmen and trade union representatives who sign the document, Reguera's proposal, which was rejected yesterday in the Development Committee of Congress, is "opportunistic" and "untimely". And they have made it public through this letter.

"Lanzarote needs to be equipped with decision-making centers that contribute to the strengthening of its institutional fabric. In this sense, the autonomy of the Port of Arrecife is an objective shared by political parties, business and trade union organizations, and the island's society as a whole, an objective that should not be subjected to opportunistic and untimely initiatives, seeking to capitalize as their own a collective demand and work.

The objective to be achieved goes beyond the mere demand for the Port Authority for the Port of Arrecife, as it is the management model of the ports and airports that must be redefined, due to their strategic importance for the island's development.

In this sense, and referring to the ports of Lanzarote, not only the Port of Arrecife, a negotiation process is essential that incorporates the state, regional and island levels, leading to the creation of a new entity for the management of the Ports of Lanzarote, in which the different levels of public administration are represented, with the appropriate participation of business, trade union and social agents.

On the other hand, the most elementary prudence leads to consider as fundamental the establishment of mechanisms that guarantee the necessary investments that, in particular, the Port of Arrecife requires and the definition of its role among the Ports of the Canary Islands, seeking the reservation in its favor of segments of the port business that contribute to achieving business figures that guarantee its full economic autonomy.

These considerations have led to the fact that practically all the political forces of Lanzarote, among which the Popular Party has been counted, until now, and the main trade union and business organizations, with special presence of the representation of port companies, have held different working meetings, in order to initiate the aforementioned negotiation, having reached the agreement to avoid individual positions.

Therefore, and in defense of the consensus previously reached, the signatory organizations reject initiatives such as the Non-Law Proposal on the Autonomy of the Port of Arrecife recently presented in the Congress of Deputies by the Popular Party, which they invite to join, again, the consensus".
