The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, pointed out this Tuesday that there is a "downward path" in the arrival of immigrants compared to last year, which "must be celebrated", he said, and attributed it to the fact that "we are working well" with the transit countries.

Sánchez has made this assessment despite the "uptick" of recent days, which has been especially evident in the Canary Islands, and more specifically in Lanzarote, where he is spending his holidays these days, in which he has taken a break to make his tenth visit to La Palma since the volcanic eruption began in Cumbre Vieja.

The president has "deeply" regretted the latest deaths recorded in Canary Islands waters and has expressed his "solidarity" with the affected families, but pointed out that "the tragedies in immigration begin thousands of kilometers from our coasts".

The reasons, he added, are "the lack of freedom, of opportunities, the persecution, that is why they ask for asylum, or even due to the effect of climate change".

Therefore, said the Spanish president, "what we have to do" is to have "a much richer vision" of what immigration represents, beyond the protection of borders.

Hence, the Government has "increased as it had not done in ten years" the items for development cooperation both in the countries of origin and in those of transit, as is being done particularly with Morocco, both from Madrid and from Brussels.
