The Nueva Canarias group in Teguise will propose in the next plenary session of the municipal corporation a series of motions aimed at "improving municipal facilities", as well as various questions and requests to the conservative government group of CC, PP and VOX.
The Canarian councilor Fernando Jiménez will express NC's "concern" regarding the "non-existent adaptation to climate change presented by municipal facilities", focusing especially on "educational centers" in Teguise. For Jiménez, “in the short term, small actions can be taken such as installing awnings in the patios of educational centers and in parks and squares that require it; and in the medium and long term, plan strategic actions aimed at the installation of pergolas, porches and, very importantly, the planting of trees.”
For the Canarians, the "high temperatures experienced in recent months will continue to be a constant throughout the year, where activities that take place outdoors will be mainly affected." Thus, Dr.
Jiménez recalls that “Canary Islands is the territory of the state with the highest ultraviolet radiation index, with an average of values classified as high of between 8 and 10; which rise to the extreme category in heat waves with values of 11 and 12, very harmful to health”. To this is added, says the councilor, “that the hours of maximum radiation coincide with the exposure of young people in their educational centers, between 12:00 noon and 4:00 p.m.”
Take advantage to advance in mitigation
On the other hand, the party proposes that the "adaptation to high temperatures be accompanied by a series of actions that favor the decarbonization of municipal public facilities." They propose, thus, that “photovoltaic panels be installed on roofs and pergolas, as well as in any location of municipal ownership that is susceptible to being able to place this type of infrastructure.”
"We propose the installation of photovoltaic panels on roofs and pergolas"
“There are schools in the Canary Islands, as is the case of Los Realejos in Tenerife, that benefit from this type of installation, reaching 82% of the energy consumed by the center through clean and own sources”, says Fernando Jiménez, who points out that the investment "would be around 30 thousand euros."
With everything, NC will take advantage of the beginning of the political course in Teguise to point out the "need to bet on green and sustainable policies", given that they understand that the incorporation into the government group of "a political party that denies climate change, will hinder a brave climate agenda adapted to the needs and challenges that Europe and society as a whole require of us."
