Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC) in Arrecife held a meeting with supporters and members this Thursday afternoon with the aim of strengthening its municipal project, which revolves around its ideology of Island-Home of care for the territory, strengthening public services, protecting the Canarian identity and exemplary conduct in the exercise of public representation.

The meeting was marked by an emotional minute of silence for the death of former Uruguayan President Pepe Mújica, recognizing his work and commitment to just causes and his example of life.

The day began with a welcome from the president of the Local Committee of NC-BC in Arrecife, Servando Pérez Dorta, who thanked the approximately 50 people who gathered at the canaristas headquarters in the capital's Altavista neighborhood for their attendance, and encouraged them to continue collaborating and militating in a political project that he assures “will be key to the future of the city.”

Next, the spokesperson for the canaristas in the capital, Sheila Guillén, spoke, defending the leadership of women in political activity and detailing the difficulties they encounter in accessing positions of relevance both in private companies and in public institutions.

“Gender equality cannot be an optional subject. It cannot remain in the background. Women face real challenges, real barriers. The female activity rate was 55 percent compared to 63.69 percent for men in 2024. Women earned 19.6 percent less salary than men that same year. And only 35.5 percent of women held positions as senior managers or directors,” said Guillén, who encouraged the women of Arrecife and Lanzarote to take an active step into politics, leading groups, electoral lists and public institutions.

On the other hand, Guillén defended the pride of being from Arrecife, of belonging to a seafaring people that contained the arrival of pirates and corsairs.

“Faced with the imposition of other cultures; we say that first we recognize our own. Faced with the April fairs, our Canary Islands Day; faced with flamenco dancers, our women from Choirs and Dances of Arrecife; faced with booths and sevillanas; our town palaces: the Torrelavega, La Democracia, La casa del Miedo and our Murgas and Comparsas,” concluded Guillén.

Finally, the president of the canaristas on the island and deputy in the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Yoné Caraballo, praised the great work that is being carried out in the Local Committee of Arrecife, predicting a future of electoral success that “will be the success of all the residents of Arrecife because we will bring transformative, courageous ideas and proposals to the City Council, always looking out for the well-being of our people under humanist principles and values.”

“It is essential that good people enter politics. Good people who do not make this activity a profession or an opportunity for their personal or family enrichment. We need people with values, with ethics, with experience in social struggle. People who have fought with the political powers from any position,” emphasized Caraballo, who concluded with a phrase from the deceased Mújica: “those who like silver, far away from politics.”
