The Cabildo of Lanzarote presented this Wednesday, September 7, the 33rd edition of the Insular Craft Fair. This traditional event will be marked this year by the gender perspective in the sector and by sustainability, being the first fair on the Island with environmental assessment.

It will be held from September 9 to 15 in Mancha Blanca and will feature the participation of almost a hundred professional artisans from all over the Canary Islands. The event has a budget of about 300,000 euros, financed by the Culture and Crafts Areas of the Island Council.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, together with the councilors Carmen Guadalupe, Benjamín Perdomo and Alberto Aguiar, and the mayor of Tinajo, Jesús Machín, attended the press conference of presentation, which was organized in the Farmer's Monument.

Dolores Corujo stressed how positive it is for the craft sector to be able to celebrate once again, on this occasion with total normality, this fair so important for the Island.

“This year we will have more stalls, with more artisans who will exhibit, with stellar performances such as that of the renowned artist Melendi, and with the possibility of increasing the capacity and receiving a greater number of visitors at the Fair, generating more expectation and, therefore, more benefits for professionals”, stressed the president.

As a main novelty, this will be the first fair with environmental assessment. All the CO2 that is going to be expelled into the atmosphere will be compensated so that in the coming years it will be a 100% sustainable event. For this, there will be a company that will analyze different strategic points so that in the future it becomes the first sustainable fair, as many music festivals already do. This will carry out an identification of the impacts to analyze the carbon footprint. In addition, this year a big step will be taken with recyclable cups and the artisans will eat in a dining room with reusable dishes.

Live Crafts

On the other hand, the Fair will feature live crafts, with different professionals who will work live, such as basket makers, weavers, wool spinners or roseteros, among others. Finally, in support of the art sector of Lanzarote, this edition features a poster made by the students of the Pancho Lasso Art School.

“We have put a great effort and enthusiasm in the organization of this event, starting months before to plan it and carrying out in recent weeks actions to make the result as good as possible. We want to thank all those who have made it possible for everything to be ready and the City Council of Tinajo for the collaboration, and we trust that the Fair will be a success”, concluded Corujo.

For his part, the mayor of Tinajo, Jesús Machín, conveyed his gratitude to the Cabildo for making the Fair a reality one more year and assured that they remain at the disposal of the Island Institution for whatever is necessary during this. He also celebrated the increase in participation in this edition and the socio-economic benefits of the event for the municipality and for Lanzarote.

Nanino Díaz Cutillas Festival 2022

The Councilor for Culture of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Alberto Aguiar, announced during the presentation the expected return of the Nanino Díaz Cutillas Folk Festival. “This edition will feature representatives from all over the Archipelago gathered in one of the most insular festivals that Lanzarote has. The idea is to give a small twist to the proposal with some touch of modernity, towards new ways of understanding tradition. We are looking for a concept of spectacle, not a festival for use, with a prior control of the repertoires and avoiding the dead times derived from scene changes”, he explained.

The meeting will take place in its usual location, the Plaza de los Dolores de Mancha Blanca. The event, of about two hours duration, will begin this Wednesday, September 9, from 21:00 hours and admission will be free. Also, this year women will have special prominence in the Festival, as in the Fair, with Canary interpreters such as Mariví Cabo, Yumara Luis, Almudena Hernández and Claudia Álamo.

Finally, the commitment to nature and the conservation of our ecological and historical heritage has been taken into account. The presentation texts of each intervention, in a poetic tone, allude to historical figures and elements of our islands, as well as to their landscapes and natural symbols (the trade winds, the sea, the volcanoes, etc.), in connection with the folklore, which rides in communion with these.

The participants in the festival will be Timbayba, Domingo El Colorao + Mariví Cabo from Fuerteventura, Añate from Tenerife and Arón Morales from La Gomera, Vientos de Salmor and Claudia Álamo from El Hierro, Estrella y Guía from Gran Canari and Yumara Luis from La Palma, Almudena Hernández from La Graciosa and El Pavón Lanzarote.

The artistic direction of the festival is in charge of the Lanzarote musician Benito Cabrera and the locutions in charge of Alicia Rodríguez.
