The Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, a center attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, is advancing in its commitment to humanizing the health system by launching a new initiative for patients who finish their chemotherapy treatment in the Oncohematological Day Hospital.
The proposal, conceived by the Nursing team, consists of delivering a card made with biodegradable handmade paper that contains encapsulated seeds. These seeds can germinate by submerging the paper in water overnight and planting it in soil, watering them frequently until they bloom, giving rise to flowers, aromatic plants, or small vegetables. Through this detail, the hospital wants to emotionally accompany those who have overcome a particularly difficult stage and motivate them in their recovery process.
The seeds are selected for their germination capacity and give rise to flowers such as poppies and daisies, aromatic herbs such as chamomile, rosemary, or mint, and vegetables such as tomatoes and carrots. The service staff explains to each patient how to germinate and care for them, thus promoting a symbolic link with the process of rebirth and flourishing after the illness.
Humanization of care
This initiative is part of the humanization strategy promoted by the Lanzarote Health Services Management, which seeks to offer more comprehensive care, focused not only on the clinical aspect but also on the emotional and human well-being of each person. In the last month, two patients have received this plantable card, which includes a personalized and hopeful message written by the nursing team.
The Oncohematological Day Hospital of Molina Orosa promotes an approach of personalized and comprehensive care for patients throughout the disease process. For years, the service team has been developing actions aimed at humanizing care, such as the installation of the Bell of Hope, which patients ring at the end of their cancer treatment as a symbol of joy and overcoming.
In addition, thanks to the collaboration protocol between the Management and the Acompañar Social Action Association, volunteer musicians offer small live concerts during treatment sessions, creating a more friendly and emotionally enriching environment for patients and families.

Professional team
This Oncohematological Day Hospital is staffed by a multidisciplinary team consisting of eight nurses, two auxiliary nursing care technicians, six oncology specialists, and a caretaker.
The facilities have two intravenous treatment rooms with eighteen armchairs and three rooms with beds to administer long-term treatments, as well as a nursing consultation that offers specialized care to patients and provides information regarding their illness and the complexity of the treatments, while advising on issues such as nutrition and other aspects that help maintain a good quality of life for the cancer patient.
Until April 2025, the nursing team has administered a total of 2,702 treatments, of which 1,944 correspond to chemotherapy and the rest to other intravenous procedures. Likewise, 344 nursing consultations have been carried out in this period.
